A cade-skiff is a job unique to Mélusine, specifically the Lower City and the Sim. Cade-skiffs drag bodies out of the Sim.[1]

Description[]

Cade-skiffs have a guild: the Cade-Skiffs Guild, and have ranks including journeyman and master.[2][3] The cade-skiff guildhall is in Fishmarket in Havelock.[3] Beneath the guildhall is a morgue.[4] Cade-skiffs have some authority and can be granted access to the Mirador, so long as they state their business (at least if the cade-skiff is a journeyman). The cade-skiffs seem to own Fishmarket since the time of Cyprian Ophidius, and use “the Dead Gallery to keep the fish fresh long enough to sell it.”[5] The Masters' Hall is "just a big room with a long table and a bunch of chairs", and a frayed and worn carpet on the floor.[5]

Cade-skiffs are known gossips and quite knowledgeable. They often show people the bodies of their deceased loved ones, and seem to be involved to some degree in investigating how the deceased died.

The "cade" is connected to Cade Cholera, a figure of death in Mélusine. They are very secretive about their mysteries. Felix Harrowgate notes that it's unclear if cade-skiffs are intended to honor the drowned dead or simply keep the Sim clear.

Their traditional "uniform" is a long, black coat and a broad-brimmed soft black hat.[2][4]
